Rain water harvesting essay
We all know that what is the importance of water in our day to day life as because in our daily activities we are able to find the use of water. No doubt three-fourth of the Earth is covered with water and it contains water but we can’t use it for a drink or we cannot provide it to that area which is far beyond the ocean. So overall there is some area Where water is present in sufficient amount where is in some area it is present in less amount. Whatever area you live you must have to know the importance of rainwater harvesting and apply it in practical life as because things are changing in a fast manner.
Why there is a water crisis problem
1) Fast rate of urbanization reduces an availability of open surface for the natural recharge of groundwater.
2) Human body is mostly composed of water and we need fresh and clean water to drink but fresh water sources are decreasing day by day.
3) Global warming effects are results in the melting of Iceberg.
4) failure of monsoon.
There must be an impact of the water crisis and we have to find the solution for it.
*Our topic rainwater harvesting is the right solution to the water crisis*
According to Wikipedia
Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and storage of rainwater for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater can be collected from rivers or roofs, and in many places, the water collected is redirected to a deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), a reservoir with percolation, or collected from dew or fog with nets or other tools. Its uses include water for gardens, livestock, irrigation, domestic use with proper treatment, indoor heating for houses, etc. The harvested water can also be used as drinking water, longer-term storage, and for other purposes such as groundwater recharge.
Rainwater harvesting is one of the simplest and oldest methods of self-supply of water for households usually financed by the use
How to do rainwater harvesting
1) Rooftop harvesting
Everybody in his house has room in this method rainwater is to be catch in the roof of the house/building. Now we can store this rainwater in a tank or Artificial recharge system.
The system mainly consists of the following process:-
Catchment in roof floor
Transportation through pipe
We can use filtered rooftop rainwater in a various way:-
In this method, rainwater is moved to Storage tank which we can use it for day to day activities like:-
Some of the most used recharging methods are
Recharging by dug Wells.
recharging of borewells.
In a city or in a village where there is a lack of water resources we can also make a pond system where we can create a proper connectivity up to the pond.
Rainwater which falls on the village extracted at one place like in pond. This system is used in many places and the problem of water is reduced to a great level.
3) In less water scarcity places you can use rainwater by shifting rainwater to your garden or in Green Roof
You need to make a system, where up to some mark water goes to Green roof after that left water must be stored in a barrel or a tank
By using more creative ideas you can get more methods of rainwater harvesting.
But for now,
let’s go on into the advantages of rainwater harvesting:-
1) Many a time comes when there is a condition of drought in a city or village at that time if you have knowledge of rainwater harvesting it can supplement your regarding water.
2) Independent water supply during water restriction.
3) When clean water is costly at that time you can use rainwater harvesting as a source to cover your need.
4) It can also supplement to main water harvesting.
5) Decreases demand of groundwater like well and therefore groundwater is recharged.
Rain Water Harvesting as a Government Policy
The Government has been promoting the adoption of ‘Rainwater harvesting’ as a mass movement. ‘Rainwater Harvesting’ is also an important component for achieving the goals of ‘Water Security’. ‘Shelter Security’ and ‘Ecological Security’ enunciated in the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s 15 Point programme. Universal adoption of Rainwater Harvesting by government departments, Non- Governmental organizations (NGOs) and
people would go a long way in improving the ground water levels in the states as well as in meeting the immediate requirements of the people for fresh water. Considerable success has been achieved in propagating the beneficial effects of Rainwater Harvesting and the Government departments, NGOs, industries and individuals are now involved in this task of Rainwater Harvesting. Several government departments have issued separate guidelines for the implementation of Rainwater Harvesting by their respective departments. It is, therefore, considered necessary, at this stage, to issue comprehensive guidelines to coordinate the activities of various agencies involved in Rainwater Harvesting to maximize the benefits and bring about synergy.
